    Empirical research within the social scientific study of religion in general and within the psychology of religion in particular remains very conscious of the complex nature of its subject matter. Empirical research in this field needs to take cognisance of the many forms in which religion is expressed (say, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism) and the many facets within the forms (say, beliefs, behaviours and affiliation). Working in the 1970s, Francis (1978a; 1978b) advanced the view that the attitudinal dimension of religion offered a particularly fruitful basis for coordinating empirical enquiry into the correlates, antecedents and consequences of religiosity across the life span

    The effect of wall cooling on a compressible turbulent boundary layer

    Experimental results are presented for two turbulent boundary-layer experiments conducted at a free-stream Mach number of 4 with wall cooling. The first experiment examines a constant-temperature cold-wall boundary layer subjected to adverse and favourable pressure gradients. It is shown that the boundary-layer data display good agreement with Coles’ general composite boundary-layer profile using Van Driest's transformation. Further, the pressure-gradient parameter β_K found in previous studies to correlate adiabatic high-speed data with low-speed data also correlates the present cooled-wall high-speed data. The second experiment treats the response of a constant-pressure high-speed boundary layer to a near step change in wall temperature. It is found that the growth rate of the thermal boundary layer within the existing turbulent boundary layer varies considerably depending upon the direction of the wall temperature change. For the case of an initially cooled boundary layer flowing onto a wall near the recovery temperature, it is found that δ_T ~ x whereas the case of an adiabatic boundary layer flowing onto a cooled wall gives δ_T ~ x^½. The apparent origin of the thermal boundary layer also changes considerably, which is accounted for by the variation in sublayer thicknesses and growth rates within the sublayer

    An experiment on the adiabatic compressible turbulent boundary layer in adverse and favourable pressure gradients

    A wind-tunnel model was developed to study the two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer in adverse and favourable pressure gradients with out the effects of streamwise surface curvature. Experiments were performed at Mach 4 with an adiabatic wall, and mean flow measurements within the boundary layer were obtained. The data, when viewed in the velocity transformation suggested by Van Driest, show good general agreement with the composite boundary-layer profile developed for the low-speed turbulent boundary layer. Moreover, the pressure gradient parameter suggested by Alber & Coats was found to correlate the data with low-speed results

    'Unlicensed' natural killer cells dominate the response to cytomegalovirus infection.

    Natural killer (NK) cells expressing inhibitory receptors that bind to self major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I are 'licensed', or rendered functionally more responsive to stimulation, whereas 'unlicensed' NK cells lacking receptors for self MHC class I are hyporesponsive. Here we show that contrary to the licensing hypothesis, unlicensed NK cells were the main mediators of NK cell-mediated control of mouse cytomegalovirus infection in vivo. Depletion of unlicensed NK cells impaired control of viral titers, but depletion of licensed NK cells did not. The transfer of unlicensed NK cells was more protective than was the transfer of licensed NK cells. Signaling by the tyrosine phosphatase SHP-1 limited the proliferation of licensed NK cells but not that of unlicensed NK cells during infection. Thus, unlicensed NK cells are critical for protection against viral infection

    The space shuttle main engine (SSME) presented new requirements in the design of controls for large pump fed liquid rocket engine systems. These requirements were the need for built in full mission support capability, and complexity and flexibility of function not previously needed in this type of application. An engine mounted programmable digital control system was developed to meet these requirements. The engine system and controller and their function are described. Design challenges encountered during the course of development included accommodation for a very severe engine environment, the implementation of redundancy and redundancy management to provide fail operational/fail safe capability, removal of heat from the package, and significant constraints on computer memory size and processing time. The flexibility offered by programmable control reshaped the approach to engine design and development and set the pattern for future controls development in these types of applications

    Quasar Microlensing at High Magnification and the Role of Dark Matter: Enhanced Fluctuations and Suppressed Saddlepoints

    Contrary to naive expectation, diluting the stellar component of the lensing galaxy in a highly magnified system with smoothly distributed ``dark'' matter increases rather than decreases the microlensing fluctuations caused by the remaining stars. For a bright pair of images straddling a critical curve, the saddlepoint (of the arrival time surface) is much more strongly affected than the associated minimum. With a mass ratio of smooth matter to microlensing matter of 4:1, a saddlepoint with a macro-magnification of mu = 9.5 will spend half of its time more than a magnitude fainter than predicted. The anomalous flux ratio observed for the close pair of images in MG0414+0534 is a factor of five more likely than computed by Witt, Mao and Schechter if the smooth matter fraction is as high as 93%. The magnification probability histograms for macro-images exhibit distinctly different structure that varies with the smooth matter content, providing a handle on the smooth matter fraction. Enhanced fluctuations can manifest themselves either in the temporal variations of a lightcurve or as flux ratio anomalies in a single epoch snapshot of a multiply imaged system. While the millilensing simulations of Metcalf and Madau also give larger anomalies for saddlepoints than for minima, the effect appears to be less dramatic for extended subhalos than for point masses. Morever, microlensing is distinguishable from millilensing because it will produce noticeable changes in the magnification on a time scale of a decade or less.Comment: As accepted for publication in ApJ. 17 pages.     Development and test of video systems for airborne surveillance of oil spills

    Five video systems - potentially useful for airborne surveillance of oil spills - were developed, flight tested, and evaluated. The systems are: (1) conventional black and white TV, (2) conventional TV with false color, (3) differential TV, (4) prototype Lunar Surface TV, and (5) field sequential TV. Wavelength and polarization filtering were utilized in all systems. Greatly enhanced detection of oil spills, relative to that possible with the unaided eye, was achieved. The most practical video system is a conventional TV camera with silicon-diode-array image tube, filtered with a Corning 7-54 filter and a polarizer oriented with its principal axis in the horizontal direction. Best contrast between oil and water was achieved when winds and sea states were low. The minimum detectable oil film thickness was about 0.1 micrometer
